Real War Stories Sergeant Dan Mccaskell

60 boots in one long row, toes pointed skyward, a poncho liner over each of the bodies connected to the boots. Even dirty and exhausted, I was able to wonder which one of those was the commander I saw being blown up. I kept an eye to my back as we had bad guys in the perimeter. In the light of the burning APCs an NVA regular run into his bunker with the backpack, run out just before the backpack exploded. The Colonel, the doctor, and probably the Sergeant and radio man were at least in the bunker. A huge fireball, guest of human debris blowing out of the entrance of the bunker. I considered shooting the thrower but didn’t, as he was behind me, in front of me the second human wave attack was on its way. The lieutenant, an eye put out, a carbine wound in his side was still barking good orders. In the bottom of the sand bagged bunker, we just ran onto there was a dead soldier below and a live soldier hiding under him so scared he could not come out of the bunker. He screamed, “They are everywhere, they’re everywhere.” One of the orders barked by the lieutenant was pull him out, give him a job, he can load magazines. He was hiding under the dead guy, so I pulled him out, gave him a bunch of magazines and ammunition, and told him to go to work.

Three whistles blew simultaneously followed by a screaming blast of humanity, RPG rockets and small arms fire. I had the M 60 blazing away. The lieutenant with his AR 15 kicking spent shells above my head reached for another magazine When I looked around and saw the thrower but I had to keep firing and I could not let them get to the dead NVA who threw him self onto the concertina wire so his friends could run over his back and get inside the perimeter of APC’s. The NVA on the wire was already dead and Scala’s burning track 50 feet away. I was thinking I might be able to run over him and help Skala, slumped over the back of the 50 caliber on his APC and a small part of his head stuck out beyond the steel shield of the 50. Sparks flying from the shield as shooters tried to hit him. Then whistles rang out and all the bad guys started to retreat. I
kept firing my 60 until the lieutenant said to stop we want to save our ammo they’re going to come again. I knew there was going to be a calm before the storm and I thought I could run over the dead guy and get to scala‘s APC. Lieutenant I think I can reach Scala. Go he said. I grabbed my 16 and ammo jumped over the side of the bunker ran over the back of the dead guy to the smoldering armored personnel carrier of scala. I was able to hoist his body down, checked to see if he was alive and because he was unconscious I put him in the back of the armored personnel carrier where is body will be somewhat protected. He was missing his foot below the top of his boot but it wasn’t bleeding much at all. I thought to tie a Tourniquet it on it with my M 16 hemp strap but sniper rounds whizzed past and I didn’t think it needed it ,no bleeding. And he was in shock. I left the door open to the APC ducked and ran back toward the bunker across the dead guy and back behind the M-60. Lieutenant, Scala is alive, he’s unconscious, in shock and his left foot is missing above his boot. Three different whistles blew, this time not simultaneously and another screaming mass of humanity ran out of the jungle wood line firing RPG rockets and small arms fire. There weren’t as many, maybe 50 this time so I waited for them to get a little closer as not to give away my position in the dark before I lit up the 60. I had 3 bandoliers of 300 and I could use two out of the 3 before grabbing for my M16 for close range firing. The whistles blew and there was calm.
In the smoke filled morning light NVA bodies were everywhere. A sortie of helicopters circled and landed. I approached Scala’s APC and gritted my teeth at what I saw, Scala had bled out during the night…later the official NVA count in front of me was 108.
