Basil is a warm-weather crop, and hence late spring or early summer is the best time to plant it once all the risk of frost is over. Select a place that gets no less than 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, since basil grows well in warm and bright environments. The soil must be loose, fertile and well-drained to eliminate root rot. Keep away from windy or shaded places, as cold currents and low light are apt to retard growth and diminish the flavour of leaves.
