Training Workshop: Is you project making change? February 20 – 22, 2019

In the last years the expectation that development projects focus more on their impacts (rather than just the smooth implementation of the project measures) has risen dramatically. More than ever organisations in this field need to be able to demonstrate their projects’ contributions to development goals as well as their capacity to work in an impact-oriented manner. Project staff needs to be able to maximise the wanted impacts while at the same time having an eye on unwanted and potential negative impacts.
The above has to be in a systematic way right from the beginning and during all phases of the project. Only then the organisation can learn from past success or failure for the future activities. By constantly monitoring “Are we doing the right thing and are we doing it the right way?” the activities of the project can be directed or redirected into the needed directions.
Adapting to these challenges is not an easy way, which can be seen in project practice as in the theoretical discourse on the topic. Organisations and project staff struggle with high expectations to prove "impact" and with a multitude of definitions, concepts and tools on the market. They face with questions such as:
 What makes up the impact chain of a project showing the underlying theory of change?
 How can we keep an eye on unwanted or negative impacts of our project?
 What should be the quality of an indicator to measure impact? How to find indicators to measure qualitative aspects?
 What are appropriate methods and tools to verify these indicators; and how to set up an useful monitoring system for our project?

This workshop will answer the above questions, and specifically, will enhance your ability to plan and monitor projects systematically in an impact-oriented way.
What will you learn in this workshop?
 A better understanding of the significance of "impact orientation" in the field of development cooperation and for the concrete project work.
 How to increase the impact of your project by practicing impact oriented project planning and monitoring.
 How to set up a monitoring system

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:
 Construct an impact map and impact chains
 Define indicators for different level of impacts
 Identify appropriate methods to verify the indicators
 Design an impact oriented monitoring system

Who is this workshop for:
Participants shall be from organisations dealing with projects and programmes of development cooperation in all fields being responsible or involved in activities of project cycle management. Knowledge of formalized planning procedures like log frame-planning and the use of project cycle management is neither required nor will be taught.
Workshop methodology:
Exploring the significance of impact orientation in development cooperation and project work will lay a common ground. Then the workshop focuses on practical challenges of putting impact orientation into practice. Essential topics will receive a theoretical introduction before being practiced by the workshop participants using concrete project cases.
As the workshop language is English, it is necessary that all participants are fluent in the same.

Post-workshop support:
At the end of the workshop further reading and resources will be recommended and supplied with a CD-ROM to all participants. Also, participants can seek guidance and clarification with concrete practical questions in introducing impact orientation in their PME systems, once after the workshop within 60 days after the workshop.

Trainer Profile: Beate Holthusen, M.A. in Economics & Socio-Economics, German
She worked for more than 20 years as a development consultant, process advisor, trainer and moderator. Her fields of expertise include result based management, process- and impact monitoring, rural development, HIV and AIDS, self-help groups and primary health care.
Ms. Holthusen has conducted training in Result Based Management / Impact Orientation to NGO project staff in several countries in Asia (e.g. India, Nepal, Indonesia, Viet Nam), Africa and Latin America. Furthermore, she has practical experience in evaluating impacts of NGO projects.

Registration and organisational details:
The cost per person for the workshop is: 28.500 Rs. (incl. 18% GST) / 390 Euro
incl. food / accommodation during the 'workshop days', transport from station /airport Coimbatore to KKID & Return, training materials and course fee. The costs have to be settled directly with KKID, Coimbatore, India. Taxes as applicable will be extra and shall be borne by the participant.
