Part 1-English Translation of article in 2005.10.18《TVB Weekly》#436

Thanks very much to 心淡君 for posting the very informative article that describes the characters in Life Made Simple (LMS).

Because it is a very long article, I shall break it into several postings so I won't have to keep the English-reading fans waiting for too long.

First page: Headlines-
Modern version Ah Wong continues its touching fairy tale

Text inside circle:

The earlier series "Square Pegs"acted by Roger Kwok and Jessica Hsuan received strong viewership and became the talk of the town. Continuing the force of "Ah Wong", the forthcoming TVB series "Life Made Simple" has changed from period drama to modern times . It continues with its heartwarming and touching course and vows to make everyone touched by Ah Wong and Loh Poh Jai to shed tears.

All fans of Ah Wong, this week (the magazine) will take the lead to reveal to you the main characters in "LMS"and the most important touching places in the series.

2nd page- pg78

Character- Ding Chang Wang, the innocent fool(Ah Wong played by Roger Kwok)

Background:
Ah Wong was born with low IQ. Although he is 30 years old, he has the IQ of a 7-year-old. His mum is the typical kind mother, but his dad is a shrewd businessman who broods over his son's low IQ.

When Ah Wong was 3 years old, his mother left home with him, and changed both his name and surname so that his dad would not be able to find them.

Ah Wong was often bullied by the children in the neighbourhood. He was only accepted by his neighbour Huang Qi Feng (played by Jessica) and the two were great childhood friends.

Turning point:

Ah Wong's mother agrees to let Ah Wong see the outside world, but Ah Wong ends up working in one of his dad's group of companies. His mother refuses to let her husband acknowledge his son, resulting in strained relationship with her husband. It is only until her husband develops Alzheimer's disease(dementia associated with old people) and loses his memory that she allows him to have contact with Ah Wong when he wanders around in their neighbourhood.

It turns out that Ah Wong's dad is only acting demented to get close to his son. When Ah Wong discovers that he is his dad, he does not wish to antagonise his mother, so he keeps in contact with his dad secretly. His mother is eventually touched by the father-and-son relationship and she no longer opposes the reunion of father and son.

In the photo showing Roger holding the arms of jessica, the caption reads: " Ah Wong's complete devotion and love for Feng (Jessica) touches her deeply."

Next character: Ding Xiu Lian (Ah Wong's mother)

After she married Ah Wong's dad and gave birth to Ah Wong whose IQ progressed very slowly, her husband could not accept this fact. Lian brought her son back to China and nothing could be heard or seen about them since. After returning to Hong Kong, she changed her son's name to Ding Chang Wang.

The dessert shop's boss shows love and friendship towards her but she does not dare to accept his feelings.

Turning Point:

Lian finally opens her heart to the dessert shop's boss who has been waiting for her for many years.

Another character: Zhong Jing Rong (Ah Wong's dad)

Born poor, he has a son named Zhong Zi Hui(Ah Wong's original name) with his wife. Upon discovering that
his son's IQ is low, he refused to acknowledge him in front of others.

After his wife left him, he was unable to find them. He could only concentrate on his career and became a powerful businessman finally.

Turning Point:
Rong is saved by Ah Wong in an accident and discovers that he is his son. When Rong realises that Ah Wong is working in one of his companies as a mail man, he keeps finding excuses to get close to him.

Character: Huang Qi Feng (played by Jessica)

Background:
Born poor, Feng has always wished to be able to free her family from poverty. Since graduating from secondary school, she has been working hard to save money, hoping to go overseas for further education. Unfortunately, her mother gets conned by someone and loses Feng's savings meant for her university fees.

Feng remembers that Ah Wong's mother has saved up for his marriage, so she instigates him to steal this sum of money.

Turning Point:

Feng completes her study overseas and returns to Hong Kong. Ah Wong's mother pursues the money issue with her. Feng indicates that she will return her 3 times as much. Ah Wong's mother says that money is a small matter but what is most important is that Feng has delayed Ah Wong's marriage. It turns out that Ah Wong has been waiting 4 years for Feng and is totally uninterested in the match-making sessions that his mother arranges for him. Feng is shocked at Ah Wong's extent of devotion towards her.

Another character: Zhong Zi Cong (rich man's son played by Bosco Wong)

Background:

As his family is very wealthy, he becomes the proverbial "Golden tortise" (in Chinese, it means he is the most desirable bachelor among women seeking marriage partners). However, he is only interested in Feng. In a moment of impulse, he proposes to Feng, only to regret and cancel the marriage proposal later. This causes much embarrassment to Feng.

Cong likes Ah Wong for his unconventional thoughts. In order to stimulate his own new ideas and thinking, Cong becomes Ah Wong's good friend.

Turning Point:
Cong is involved in a car accident after drink-driving and wants to push the blame on Ah Wong. When his dad Rong (also Ah Wong's dad) learns about this, he puts up a strong objection and prevents this from happening. Cong is sure that his dad is biased in helping Ah Wong. Father and son fall out with each other.

Cong leaves his dad's company and sets up his own business. But, due to his impatience for progress, the business ends up a total failure.

Another character: An Qi, a gold-worshipper

Sets her heart on marrying into a rich family and attempts to get into the Zhong's company to get close to Cong. Relationship with Cong becomes stable as time passes. Sees the position of the daughter-in-law in the Zhong family as the ultimate prize.

Unexpectedly, Cong announces his intention to marry Feng suddenly and Qi has to back out.

Turning Point:

Cong suddenly cancels his marriage to Feng, and later, after his business fails, he realises that the person he misses the most is Qi. he finally develops a real relationship with Qi.

Note: In the little photo showing Leila Tong and Jessica, it says that Feng has returned to Hong Kong after completing her studies and becomes An Qi's assistant. That is how she gets to know Zi Cong and becomes a couple with him.

Page 4 (pg 80)

If "Square Pegs" had moved you to tears, this time "LMS" will certainly not disappoint you. Specially here to give you advance notice on 4 touching places. Please get ready tissue papers before watching:

- Ah Wong thinks about his dad and acts as an astronaunt.

Ah Wong asks where his dad is and his mother will just say he has gone up the sky. Ah Wong misunderstands this to mean outer space and thinks that his dad is an astronaunt.

-Wong assumes that his dad is the hero who has landed on the moon and takes pride in it. He often fantasizes about the outer space scenarios his dad is in. One day, when Wong is bored at home and interest strikes, he uses the bicycle, cardbox paper, alumininium foil and some other loose items to make a space suit and space ship. Thus, it is clear that he admires and misses his dad very deeply.

- Father and son acknowledge each other in crisis

Ah Wong's dad encounters some legal problems in his business and pretends to be afflicted by Alzheimer's disease in a attempt to avoid legal blame. He goes to live with Ah Wong. Father and son's relationship changes to a harmonious one.

Ah Wong likes to play with walkie-talkies and accidentally overhears smugglers saying "Astronaunt lands in desert" and thinks that his dad has appeared on the desert.

Suddenly, a shoot-out happens between the police and thieves. Ah Wong gets shot by accident and his life is in grave danger. His dad rushes there upon receiving the news. Although there is a big group of reporters, out of love for his son, he reveals the truth that Ah Wong is his biological son. The two of them become very touched and they hug each other.

------

Ah Wong, Lor Poh Jai get married

-Feng sets her heart on going overseas to study. When she receives the letter of admission from the university, both she and Ah Wong are overjoyed.

- When Feng's mother is conned and lost Feng's money meant for her university fees.

- When Feng thinks about the sum of money Ah Wong's mother has saved for his marriage, she coaxes him to lend her the money to pay for her university fees.

- When Feng completes her studies and returns to HK, she falls in love with Zi Cong. But when she recalls the happy days she has shared with Ah Wong, she changes her mind and decides to marry Ah Wong instead.

The other pages are not very important. Page 82 describes the story in Episode one which has been summarised above.
