Re: Re: Re: Re: Medford Bowl & W. Peabody

I remember your Grandfathers car as # 134 and seeing him run at Norwood and Thompson in the late sixties and early seventies. He was always a good driver and a good competitor at any of the tracks he raced on. I've been recently been going to the vintage mod site as I am trying to build as many models of the cars that I use to watch race . Thanks for the info this is really a pleasure to talk to someone who is related to some of New England racing legends . Thanks Bob

Replying to:

Medford Bowl – Medford
¼ mile paved oval (9/07/46 – 1954)
Located on Revere Beach Parkway
(aka: Mystic Valley Speedway)
The site was to become a drive-in theater, but was turned down by council

West Peabody Speedway – West Peabody
Site is now a high school running track
¼ mile paved oval (1946 – c. 1963)

Bob, send me an email. My great grandfather, Roland Lapierre, Sr. ran both tracks way back when. I've been doing some research on Medford recently and I'll probably make some more progress on it over the offseason. Channel1 Video has a series called "That Was Racing" and features old footage from the 1950s at W. Peabody (in color!) and Norwood as well.

Bob,
The only cut down flathead #5s of that era that ran those S NE tracks 'that I can Remember' are the George Summers #5

and the Tewksburry Auto Parts #5 driven by a Wilcox, Crotty, Sequin (who lost his life in it)and finally Smokey Boutwell.

I may have been wrong on the motor ,but I do remember that the car was painted red was numbered 5 then rebuilt as 5x. As I stated before the owner of the car was Archies Amoco which was located on Mystic ave Medford Ma. Almost across from the roller skating rink . The driver was John Caley and I believe he left this ride to race a corvette for a chevy dealer in Cambridge . I also remember that it raced against a 2 car team of 44 and 444 . I see that you live in Ca. I lived there in El Cajon from 83 -86 attending races on Sat. nites ,another great track gone. I was friends with mechanic of the black 99 super stock which was track champion.

Re: El Cajon

Thanks for the additional info Bob.

Here's a link to El Cajon Speedway, shortly before it was torn down for 'airport expansion'
http://public.fotki.com/DollarDave/
Was a storied track for sure and came into prominence following the loss of Balboa Stadium.

The wife and I would periodically drive the 150 miles from the desert to the coast to attend. The supermodifieds put on a spectacular show at that place.

Re: Re: El Cajon

I agree, El Cajon Speedway was a great track in the 80's. I lived in North County San Diego (1986 - 1992) and was at the track nearly every Saturday night. The racing was great and the show was tight and well run. The 99 ran a good season...but Ed Hale's #7 was our favorite. Perhaps it was the red-black-white color scheme and the same number of Barney Mattie's car from Norwood Arena in the late 60's. Another great track gone!

Re: Re: Medford bowl and West peabody speedway

At school, I have had some issues myself, and I can tell myself, of course, that we must be ready for any problems. It was really difficult for me to study physics at school. The practical tasks and the theory we were asked about were particularly overwhelming. I was fortunate that I already had a lot of cool guys here who helped me to write a big review of this work really quickly, for https://www.bestcustomwriting.com/ , so I've had this project in a week. Moreover, there were no challenges to the project's success.
