In 1952 on my 8th birthday, against my parents better judgement, my brother (who had recently married my sister and taken her -gasp- to the "suburbs" of Walpole- my father was incredulous) in law drove to our house in Roslindale in his battered 40 Chevy sedan and drove me to Norwood Arena for my first race.
Needless to say it was the highlight of my young life and thereafter.
Now the very next week our teacher told us to get out our art paper and create the most beautiful picture we could imagine.
Well you know what I drew.
A racetrack full of wildly gesticulating jalopies, roaring and smashing and speeding around the Norwoood Arena. I was sure that I was conveying the excitement and drama to all who would gaze upon it and was crushed when the teacher did a double take and politely asked me to draw my family or a bowl of fruit. Well, I obediently threw away my masterpiece but kept the pictures in my head for the rest of my life - fair trade off.
Should have kept the picture too.
