Driver Tom Shaughnessy passed away.

Thomas E. Shaughnessy Jr., 80

NORTON - Thomas E. Shaughnessy Jr., 80, of Norton passed away on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the beloved husband of the late MaryEllen (Fontannay) Shaughnessy.

Born in Newton, Mass. on Jan. 20, 1930, he was a son of the late Thomas E. Sr. and Margaret (Clancy) Shaughnessy.

Tom grew up and was educated in Newton. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1950 to 1953, and later in the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1961, before being honorably discharged from both branches of the service with the rank of private.

Before retiring, Mr. Shaughnessy had worked for most of his life as a machine operator. After retiring, he enjoyed his favorite hobby of woodworking.

A longtime race car enthusiast, Tom was an avid NASCAR fan and when younger was a familiar face at the former Norwood Arena in Norwood where he was the driver of car number 70.

He had resided in Norton for the past 15 years and had also lived in Florida and Maine. He was the father of Gary Shaughnessy of Georgia, Kevin Shaughnessy of New Hampshire and the late Ronald Shaughnessy. He is also survived by his stepchildren: Paul Fogerty of Taunton, Theresa Gomes of Norton, John Fogerty of Florida, Thomas Fogerty of Norton, David Fogerty of Rhode Island and Barbara Oliviera of Taunton. Pre-deceased by his sister Mary, he is also survived by several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Committal services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday, July 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Visiting hours have been omitted.
