Do we really need a ice rink? If so; why?

Reason: Community Impact. Ice hockey is booming in NY. With an ice rink located in EA, there will be opportunities for tournaments, as many as the organization feels they can schedule. With tournaments brings people from out of town from as close as Hamburg to as far away as the furthest hockey playing region of the world. (I wouldn't expect world travelers yet). But within a few years, I wouldn't be surprised if some teams wanted to come from PA or Canada. And when they get here, they have to sleep somewhere and eat somewhere, they will probably want to shop around in the lovely picturesque East Aurora. Hockey benefits the whole community. I am a Batavia resident who grew up in East Aurora. Both my kids play and I have seen first hand that it has a definite impact on the community. Not only that, hockey players are some of the most well mannered kids I have ever seen. By strategically situating this rink in East Aurora, kids who live in Wyoming county & Livingston county will have the opportunity to play. I know a family that drives more than 1 hour to get to Batavia to play. I do hope that the association markets to those counties right away. There are a multitude of other reasons as well, maybe some other hockey parents can give their take on the issue. Hats Off to East Aurora for getting a long over due rink! Leslie |

Leslie, Its not a done deal yet! Okay, then why is there a rink in Orchard Park that is not used by who you stated or is it utilized and is more space needed? I am not trying to be difficult but trying to understand why a two sheet ice rink is needed in the center of a village, with all the complaints about traffic etc... |

You gotta be kidding me. theres about 237.2 million Motor vehicle registrations today a number far more than the 98.9 million in 1967. and someone is worried about the increase traffic in your downtown that would come from a couple sheets of ice?? well folks from what i recall most satisfing growing up were those days of open skating with both my mom and dad holding hands in the romantic setting and another of many was playing broomball without skates at a family gathering. my hats off to anyone thats willing to support a ice rink. giving a place not just for the young but the old as well. I cringe when others (mostly my age 65) stop recalling there days in youth that the same question came up over and over of What can we do now or we are bored with nothing to do. Holly smokes is this same person complaining about to much traffic the one who does not like skatboards and needs to use the drive up window for here fast food? mr concerned tax payer. We all pay taxes and any time we use our tax money to better the people that will be living in our yard next when we go well that my friend is a good reason. Further more Leslie gave you other good reasons did you not read them before you asked your same question the second time. yes i am the tax payer that hopes to see a rink local so as i can just sit and enjoy and dream of my youthfull days all within walking distance to my east aurora home of 42 years... |

Well Paul I think she said it best "with everyone from everywhere coming to EA to do their thing, there won't be a opportunity to enjoy a rink like "we" did in the good ole days!" Yes, I grew up enjoying a out door ice rink which was FREE, I wonder how much it will cost to get a hour on this rink? Ever try to roller skate for a hour, how much did it cost for skates and a hours time? Now, rent a pair of ice skates and enjoy a hour, lets see that will be $20.00?!? well, how much?
