Re: Starbucks

Why is it that Benderson development decided to extend the soon to be Starbucks so close to the traffic circle, did they really need the extra 5 or six feet given the size of the existing parking lot in their commericial development. This is a complete disregard for esthetics and sane building practices. Although I am happy about the over all looks of the new plaza things like the above mentioned make me leary of developers and their intentions. I hope as a united village we can all stem some of the commercial building blunders that seem to have run rampent throughout WNY. Development is fine but more importantly preserve the look and feel of East Aurora. Once it's lost it will never be regained.

Re: Starbucks

I grow up in the city and just moved out here 2 years ago. The idea of East Aurora was great. Was might be the key word. First we have enough coffe shops. Second most people I know hate Starbucks coffee (I don't drink coffee and their hot chocolate does stink). Starbucks is just another big business trying to take over small town ideas. Thrid is Benderson Development, just for eveyone to know that they are a non union company (and I thought East Aurora was proud union neigborhood). From what I understand they slipped that building in and the town doesn't have the guts to make them tear it down. It is a hugh eye sore. The circle looks horrable with it there and it makes the circle dangerous cause of its distraction. If the town board was really for the town and not for big business they would not allow anything to go in that buliding and make Benderson cough up the cost. Also for everyone info, I have worked at a couple of business that were in Benderson buildings and they all we horrable buildings and they don't maintain they well either. Is that the type of business and buildings we want in town.

Re: Starbucks

Kirstie....for your information i am behind the new development of starbucks in this town. we did not force the town to do anything, they promised us a building and then decided well um,...we dont want you in here anymore. in their best interest they decided to approve us into the town. I also am thankful for benderson for helping us to provide a very nice and safe location for us to be located in. How do you mean...we have enough coffee shops already... there is only taste which is down main further and tim hortons which is so jam packed all the time that we offer the third selection with high quality coffee and high levels of customer service. Unions arent always the answer anyways.

Re: Starbucks

Well then you know less about East Aurora then me. If you cross Main Street and go about 3-4 doors way from the circle and you will see another coffee shop, Java Joes and now there is going to be Dunkin Donuts. And so what if Taste is down a few blocks this is East Aurora not Buffalo, it is not that big, that is why we are here. And I still stand by my and others in town I know that feel that building on the circle looks horrable. It is a huge eye sore. And the fact that Benderson Development may seem nice now , now is the key word. Do you want to know what kind of business they do. I know someone who worked on several Benderson's sights and he has been in construction for years and all he got was 12/hr with no health benefits. They usually pay 8-10/hr. Can you support your family on that?

Re: Starbucks

One more thing. For the Union comment, well if you are corporate mined and want to reduce the workers to slave wages and line the pockets of the corporate moguls as it was during the turn of the 20th century. Boy aren't we making one huge step backwards, no make that running backwards.

Re: Starbucks

I would say the chances of Starbucks going into the circle are about 100% with the new board in place.

if you people actually payed attention to anything...you'd realize that it isnt a question of if it is going in, it is when it is going in......

Re: Starbucks

This goes way beyond Starbucks. The once unique East Aurora is quickly becoming "Anywhere USA". The homogenization of our village will not attract visitors to our village, but focusing on our heritage will.

As stated in the Buffalo News on Sunday 4/23 "revitalized historic districts attract more upscale visitors. Heritage travelers, studies have shown, spend far more than the average tourist".

Our efforts should be to attract businesses to compliment the Roycroft Campus and keep East Aurora unique. There are many, many villages that thrive without chains and keep their character (Skaneateles,
Sanibel Island, Niagara-on-the-Lake). Rebuild the Roycroft Campus and they will come.

Re: Starbucks

I have been reading the postings on this website with great interest. As one of the "no" votes to the proposal, I would like to clarify my logic since it has been so skewed in the public domain. I voted AGAINST QUIZNOS AND STARBUCKS NOT AGAINST BENDERSON!! Their initial agreement (which is on file at Village Hall - or contact Trustee Weberg for a copy) was for "small retail, professional, medical commercial establishments" with no mention of Starbucks, Quiznos, Mighty Taco or anything else. I believe the public had envisioned small medical and professional type businesses in the back and Starbucks was supposed to be a bank (not that we need another one of those in this village either!) Once the buildings were built, the opinion seemed to be "well, since they are already built who cares what business occupies them." I think it is a game and once again the residents of this community are the losers! If you really are concerned about that site contact Trustee McDonnell. He stated at Candidate's Night that he has a "long standing good relationship with Benderson." Or contact Mayor DiPietro who after saying he would "never vote for Quiznos" swung the 3/3 vote for the Quiznos approval. Remember that knowledge is power so be informed and hold your representatives accountable!!!

Re: Starbucks

From what it sound like the people of East Aurora are not happy with what is going on. I know we voted these new people who don't care about EA but about money. Well if they are reading, we can just as easily vote you out. Since there seems to be such talk about Starbucks coming in why didn't they leave it up to the people in the town. But since they didn't why do we make the choice any how. Let Starbucks spend thier money to come here and to pay off our elected officals. What can be done is protest them. There are many ways the one that works well with big company is a bad out look. DON'T GO THERE. DON'T BUY STARBUCKS COFFEE. Show them they are not welcome. Hit them were it hurts the most in their pocket book. If the place is not covering their expenses they will leave. EA was once a place that was loaded with small, mom and pops places and they are being forced out and we are paying the price for it. The circle looks like hell and I promise eveyone thinks the traffic is bad now just wait. The only alternative to the circle is Oakwood which means Tim Hortons and the traffic problem there. All I can say is WELCOME TO SMALL TOWN AMERICA, OR WHATS LEFT OF IT.

Re: Starbucks

Kirstie,
Marilla, Wales or Colden are near bye and thy don't have all the big city blues that ea now is expected to experience so move there!
Hummmm let me see now, Main street seems to be places run by local owners, ma and pop stores but not in the traditional means, mcdonalds is owned locally and supports locally, same as bar bill and right down main to the pink et all.
Tim Hortons is locally owned as will starbucks so if you don't shop there your not shopping locally!
Remember they gave up drive thrus to be a part of this community, and all I hear aboutis a walkable community so would give up roads to be a better walkable commmunity?
