Re: Pedestrian Safety

It is a walkable community, especially if pedestrains used the sidewalks and crossed when legal! Check the police reports about how many people are struck and then check and see how many vehicle operators were at fault; you'd be surprised to know that its usually the walker who isn't paying attention to the automobile!

Re: Pedestrian Safety

We walk Main Street, in the village, almost every evening. Pine Street is the end of the Village shopping area and a natural place to cross from the north side of Main Street to the south side. This intersection is almost impossible to cross with any feeling of safety. There are no pedestrian crossing signals, as there are at many other Village crossings, the north side of the light only turns green if there is southbound road traffic and the "no right on red" sign is generally unobserved. If you wish to cross Main from the north to the south side, without jaywalking, you must wait for road traffic, driving south on Pine, to trip the traffic light and hope a northbound car, on Olean Road, doesn't hit you turning left.
This would be a good place to start making the Village, and its commerical area, more pedestrian friendly.

Re: Pedestrian Safety

Thanks to Benderson and other big businesses that have chosen to hang their corporate hat in East Aurora, many residents have moved on to becoming more insular and less active out of convenience. For example, Tim Hortons has taken over the west end of Oakwood because people don't want to get out of their cars to go 50 feet for a doughnut and coffee...50 FEET!
When did being a pedestrian become so second-class????? I think many of those objectors are secretly envious of the walkers or are past child-rearing age and have forgotten the incredible health benefits associated with the "past-time." Who else could take offense to promoting a "MORE walkable community", especially when both our village and global environments are rapidly changing? Why should area pedestrians be penalized for NOT walking in front of cars and affecting the safety study that Putin Taine referred to in his message. These people deserve respect for their healthy choices in life and their safety should be considered just as important as any drivers. I have tried to cross Main at Paine and North Willow St. with my children with much irritation. The Boys and Girls Club is located at Paine St. and those kids WANTING to go to the library have to face this crazy off-centered, dangerous intersection. It would turn me off to the library too if I didn't have a little extra patience. Why should the kids have to move away from the intersection to cross? Isn't that supposed to be the safe spot for pedestrians???? To me, this is the most irresponsible area for pedestrians because there is nobody crossing children and no crossing lights for them to use safely.
We have a large group of pedestrians who take to the streets each day to appreciate East Aurora on a deeper level than just looking out their van windows. We even promote self-guided tours in this community!!
I invite people to begin their day just a little earlier so they can walk and breathe in the fresh air. You will feel better about yourself and be a little more protective of your beautiful community and you might even meet someone special.
