Tush Treatment Question

Hi all,

We have an Asian cow with extremely short tushes. Recently, we noticed the tissues of the sulcus and surrounding mucous membranes have become slightly swollen. We are concerned the m/ms will grow over the tushes and cause injury or infection. Has anyone dealt with this problem in their elephants and if so, what treatments were performed and what were the results? Any advice on prevention in the future?
Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Re: Tush Treatment Question

Hi Pat,

Our oldest cow has very short tushes also in fact they don't grow out of the sulcus at all. The surrounding membranes swell up all the time and she will actually break off small pieces every once in awhile. We basically use the hose as a water pick to clean the surrounding area. We have never had a serious problem other than some tendernous and swelling. The membranes have never grown completely over the sulcus, there is always a small canal which we use to irragate. Good luck .

Re: Tush Treatment Question

Hi Pat -
have you checked the edges of her tushes to see if there are any rough spots? if there are, they may be irritating the soft tissue in there and causing the swelling. If you find a rough spot, you should be able to smooth it out pretty easily with an emery board or a small piece of sand paper. It might be difficult to get something up in there with the swelling present, but it also only takes a couple of strokes to remove the rough spot or spots completely.
Take care,
Harry

Re: Tush Treatment Question

Hi there,

Thanks Harry and Ron for your insights.

Just an update from my end. The elephant in question is improving and has not developed any problems since my original posting. She was treated with warm water irrigation and flushing with Nolvasan solution and the swelling has mostly gone away. Still no sign of any tushes though. They are so short they cannot be palpated or visually examined. We will continue daily warm water irrigation for now.
Thanks for your help on this!
Pat
