Onward
Who would've thought our wee church magazine could cause such a stooshie? But the last issue seems to have managed it. And, reading the latest issue's front page, this issue may see it rumble on a bit longer. I peronally feel that the website were right to remove the article from the online version. This was a personal view of the situation in the middle east and could, so very easily, have been interpreted as Our Church's view of the situation. An easy assumption to make since it was directly available from our homepage. In the latest issue the editor makes it clear that the offending article was a personal contribution and NOT an editors comment. Fair enough. Maybe it's just that the editor is so widely known and accepted as THE editor that the distinction wasn't obvious. So, should our church magazine be the place to evoke such debate? Or should it keep to simply getting information to the congregation? I'm finding it hard to make my mind up on this. Debate is good. And now we have the perfect place for it. This forum. |

Having had time to reflect on this, I find myself thinking that if our church magazine can spark off debate on any issue, then that surely can't be a bad thing. My problem is that I'm not clued up enough on the situation in the middle east to make any intelligent comment. I do think, however, that the latest issue's open letter from the minister gives every one of the congregation something to think about. The future of the Church in Kilbarchan. Owain has just had his tenure extended for another three years(minimum), and I for one don't envy him the job he has to do in those three years. Big changes are coming to the way we worship in the village - whether we like it or not. We just have to try to make sure we end up with something that is best for everyone. No easy task! I find it hard to see there being two congregations in the village in another ten years. It would seem that we are going to have to bite the bullet sometime and decide how that's going to work. Interesting times..... |

Can I draw everyone's attention to the news link from our homepage regarding Christian groups being "raided" by police in Zimbabwe. With the congregational meeting looming, where the topic of discussion will be the future shape of worship in the village, this article puts our problems into perspective. We have two churches and cannot agree on how to progress into the future, while in Zimbabwe ordinary people cannot meet to worship without intimidation and, in a lot of cases, extreme violence from police and pro-government forces. Maybe an unfair comparrison, but it made me wake up and smell the coffee. |
