Message:   Firstly, I'll admit that I'm no expert on the Northern line!

However, I think I'm right in saying that Kennington is just after where the two branches of the Northern join, so I'd guess that this is to do with the signalling arrangements involved in the convergence of the two branches.

However, I know that there are drivers (either past or present!) from the Northern who drop in here from time to time, so I hope they'll be able to enlighten us on the matter!
