Message:   Firstly, for the benefit of 'non LU' staff, the TMS is the Train Monitoring System fitted to the D Stock - there are some photos of the unit on the 'main' part of the site, but in view of this thread I may well write a page on the topic explaining its use and purpose in more detail in the near future!

Back to the thread though......

As you say, the most common problem seems to be the flashing over rail gaps, however I can relate a story from only last Saturday which has relevance.

On picking up a train at Earls Court I suspected that there were motors out, as its performance wasn't great - acceleration was poor and it took much longer than normal to reach even 30 mph.

The standard check of using the Air Brake button to look for the rheo brakes coming in suggested that there were motors out on the first and sixth cars. Tripping and resetting the Overloads and Traction A & D mcb's didn't cure the problem, so on arrival at Ealing Broadway I called the Controller to request the train technician to meet me.

This happened at Earls Court. However, as I'd left Ealing Broadway I'd noticed that the 'car 6' lamp was flashing constantly (this had been written up previously, though it seems the depot had been unable to fault it). The TT plugged in his test box as I headed to High Street. As we approached High Street he apparently observed that the TMS on car 6 was dead.

We changed ends, and on opening up the cab, the TMS didn't liven up. This remained the situation for quite a while as we headed west again, but the TMS suddenly came back to life. This didn't last for long though, and I was told that the train would be changed over at Ealing Broadway on that trip.

The TT mentioned that this was the third train in a week that he knew of that had to be withdrawn for this reason.

In case it's of use the unit was 7020.

I hope that's of some help!
