Message:   Firstly, I'd like to echo Jim's welcome to someone from the Train Maintenance side. Thanks for the posting, and I do hope you'll continue to contribute to this and other threads too!

I did have a chance to have a very quick look over Train 1 whilst it was at Ealing Common, though to date I haven't got near Train 2 - all my duties recently seem to have been platform pick ups, rather than depot starts!

I certainly agree on the ergonomics point - I think it's a great job, and from a drivers point of view it should be an improvement, though it seems a shame they've scrimped on a few details - no illumination in the guages, no windscreen washer, no wiper in the 'M' door window. But the new Instructor's seat arrangements are a great improvement, and I'm sure the new drivers seat offers more flexibility too. As for the offside door close button - pure luxury!

I was interested in your comments on the technical aspects, and your reservations about these.

Of course your comments about the air con for the driver is valid, but am I not correct in thinking that there were reservations that the weight even of this unit was 'marginal' from a structural point of view? Even if 'the powers that be' had wanted air con for the whole train, would the structures have been able to take the weight, in your opinion?

In 'our' defence though - several other stocks are similarly fitted with air con for the driver only, and - so far as I'm aware - the lines concerned don't take an undue amount of grief on the subject.

I suppose too that there is also a consideration in that the life of even the refurbed trains is going to be relatively short, and perhaps the financial investment was not considered to be justifiable?

I'll certainly be in touch by email!
