Well folks, looks like we're getting a new county jail. Votes in at 70% for, 30% against.

Folks: Sometimes you just can't beat the bad guys unless you play the game with their rules. We lost this battle, but we have not lost the war.

I honestly think that after the last bond election failed, people do not want to get knocked in the head with this every year. So we get a new jail. Time to get some people to run it. |

They played the right card. Sell the voters on fear (not on facts) and the voters will do your bidding. Not likely you can change people who enjoy being affraid. However, frightened people always pay a high price for their insecurity. |

I really don't think that was it to be honest. I voted no on the jail for many reasons. Everyone will pay one way or another, that much is fact. I think that point was the biggest reason for such a huge swing the other way. I could be wrong, just my opinion. |

I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction. The Bond money to build the jail will fall short by more than a million dollars when it is all said and done, do to cost overuns, and we, the VOTERS will get stuck with the overages in more taxation.

One good thing about the bond passing, our property taxes are going to go higher, which means our property valuations are going higher, which means if you want to sell your property and get the heck out of dodge (Big Spring), it will be harder to sell your home.

Every work you guys said is wright-on and I add to that, Bet they (county) still cuts lose from the Senior Center and Library. Where has the book-keeper and treasurer been all these years?. Why did they not let the county know things were getting in the red?. If they can't do it, put some one in there that can do more than read and write. And a little horse cents would not hurt. |

Why shut the .... up? The story has not come to an end. Far from it. The County now has to TRY and sell the bond and that will not be easy. Remember, last year Howard College got their bond passed and had their bond rating drop from triple A status to just an A status when they went to sell it, simply because the institution is located in Howard County and Big Spring. The Bonding Company cited weak local government and an overtaxed populace as the reason for lowering their bond rating. And this was prior to both the County and City being cited (10-17-07) by the Federal Government on ADA violations as well as the current property tax increases. Municipalities are no different then individuals when it comes to borrowing money. If you have a poor credit score and a shaky financial history, you will pay a very high rate, if you can get the loan or bond at all. The jail story is far from being over. This is just a new chapter. |

last year the bond was defeated by 60 some odd percent. before this election, the county already granted the construction contract to an outside company, they used nothing but scare tactics to sell this, on this forum the pro's were out numbered a good 10-1 by us who did not want this outrageously expensive jail, there were some who found the voting machine's out of whack with tabulating the correct vote, the county judge said it was too close to call but yet they had everything in place to proceede with the jail. did they already some how know the bond would pass? nah, that would be illegal. jfk |

Apparently, "SomeoneWhoCares" has not read the site information regarding the posting of profanity. I hear a bouncer coming to the door ..... Some folks just don't get it. Freedom of speech does come with responsibilities and consequences. |

I honestly don't think there is anything illegal about the election. 70 to 30? To lopsided. I honestly expected a loss on the issue by a close margin. As far as this site being a fair representation of the public...not accurate. This site is made up of alot of people from the same fabric. It is a fit that everyone agrees on a topic as hotly contested as this jail is. I am not that concerned. One way or another, my taxes are going up. I voted no...I was in the minority. I can live with that. It is why we have elections. Like I said earlier. Time to find some people who can run it. And to someonewhocares...

Hi. I'm fairly new to the forum. I am surprised the jail passed by such a wide marging. Is this the correct place to ask a question? What message from Heaven do you bring, Mr. 777? |

Folks: This is proof that the VOTE works. It is also proof that folks were "scared" into voting for the darned thing. Lastly, it also proves that there is still alot of voter apathy out there. I would say, if WE the PEOPLE, ever intend to have the VOICE of the PEOPLE heard again, WE must all do our part to get people here out of the APATHY PITY PARTY MODE!

As I see it, the County Commissioners Court and the Sheriff got what they wanted. I would suggest that a Citizens Commission be established to ensure that it does not happen again with the new jail when built. They should be the checks and balances to make sure that the new facility does not get abused by Arrogant County Commissioners or County offices.

HM777, I whole heartedly agrees with you and have said that from the beginning. OBVIOUSLY, the powers that be don't know how to manage a building and I would gladly volunteer to be on a committee to oversee that the new one is properly maintained and taken care of. |
