Can't Hire in Big Spring
Did you folks know that the majority of businesses in Big Spring have had to lower their standards for employment (particularly in doing DRUG SCREENING) in order to hire folks here, because there is an over abundance of DRUG USERS in Big Spring? Big Spring, as a city, has more drug users per capita than any other town its size nationally. Big Spring Employers have stated on local radio and tv programs that they can't hire folks here because there is so much drug use among those who live here. What does this say about Big Spring? It says that the Big Spring Police Department either can't or isn't doing their job at getting drugs off the streets here. It says that there is so much drug use, that many lives are placed in peril every single day because someone isn't together enough to do their job correctly. I will say this. If the rich and powerful in Big Spring, who have kept Big Spring from growing, would get out of their drug habits and the drug business, and if the BSPD would quit covering it up for them and start treating them the same way that treat everyone else not in that upper echelon of our society, perhaps things here could change for the better. To this end, I don't see Big Spring getting any better until a few things change around town and inside city and county government. When they (those who serve the public trust) quit asking for and accepting bribes and tokens from the upper crust of society in order to keep hiding their sins and crimes, then Big Spring will see change. Maybe then the drug problem will go away and Big Spring can become what it has been denied for so many years .... a great place to live, *not a place that is nationally known to get away with murder (*-remark source: Jay Leno, Paul Harvey). |

What sort of businesses are you talking about? How many retailers/ convenience stores/ fast food joints require drug testing? The state and federal government operations here likely have no leeway re drug testing--procedures come from Austin or Washington. I don't know about the school district and the City, but I doubt that either would increase tolerance for drug use. If you have proof--not just a hunch or rumor-- that there is any sort of conspiracy to tolerate/ distribute drugs, why not contact the DEA, FBI, and the Texas Rangers and make a sworn statement? |

But, we forget that the city recently authorized money for a drug task farce to make Big Spring safe again Sure can't wait to see the results of THAT!!! |

big spring has been a central hub for narcotic's trafficing for decades. when operation purple cow came through almost 10 years ago alll the town leader's, that goes for all of the court's as well, were nowhere to be found that day. i know, i was at the court house that day. these people have eye's and ear's all over this region. a blind man can see what is going on. as far as proof goes, when all law enforcement in this area is controlled and the media as well you might as well flogg a dead horse. that is why outside friend's have to be contacted. i don't know the day or the hour, i only know that they are aware of many going's on in this town and that they will be here, then we can start to prosper as a town like we should have been doing all along instead of having a few vulture's pick our bone's dry. jfk |

Let me make (2) local heavy employers known to you. StarTek and Solitaire Homes. StarTek quit drug testing some time ago because nearly everyone they tested failed. The same with Solitaire Homes. The funny thing here is that one of the big wigs at Solitaire Homes was on KBST and made the comment that they were having a hard time hiring because most of the people they had tested came up positive for drugs. What does that tell you about our local citizenry? It tells me that business folks either lower their standards and don't test for drugs or they won't have many folks working for them because of the drug problem in Big Spring.

HM & HE, FYI, BSPD is currently accepting applications if you would like to join the police force and help the fight against drugs and crime since you obviously can do a better job. The reason for the shortage is losing officers to the oil field and other departments for an increase in pay. Since you are all readers of the Big Spring Hearld, keep track of the police beat of those who are arrested for drugs and such and then read their indictments later. The police do their job it is the district attorney and the court who is responsible for the punishment for their crime. Why not direct your question to Hardy Wilkerson? Just as quick as they remove one dealer another is taking his place. You all should not be so quick to point the finger. |

A reworked municipal golf course and a new club house are frills. It seems like borderline insanity for the City Council to have directed millions of dollars toward a golf course while not providing a sufficient wage to maintain an adequately staffed police department. |

Ok, for starters, I don't read the Herald. Its a waste of time and money. They have a lopsided point of view to everything as most newspapers do today. Next, the money spent on the "War on Drugs" since the 1950's has been a total waste. While I don't like drugs nor have ever partaken of them, it is a "personal" choice in my honest opinion. I would like to see the government end the war on drugs, legalize them and tax the u know what out of them. PROHIBITION does NOT work! We've already proven that with alcohol. There are problems at the BSPD. The Police are supposed to "Serve and Protect". Well, they serve, but they don't serve equally across the board. The rich in the town get away with alot more than the poor do. Why? Because they are able to BUY their way out of situations whereas the poor cannot. This is part of th e local corruption problem we have in Big Spring City/County Government. It has existed for years and as long as they think they can still get away with it, they will, until the FEDS step in to "Fix" the problem and get rid of the corruption. I am a veteran of the USAF. Thanks be to the Almighty Heavenly Father and His Son, that no nuclear exchanges happened on my watch. The world would now be a much different place had it happened. I considered being a cop after I left the service, but decided not to. I wouldn't do it today, not in Big Spring. You couldn't pay me enough. Some things would seriously have to change here for me to even consider it. As far as Hardly Wilkerson goes, I know him well. I don't approve of his lack of prosecution of these criminals, as many here don't. Frankly, he's the "worst DA" we've had in recent history. I don't believe we should extend another season to him when the vote comes up. He needs to get out and earn a real living by doing a real job that requires him to DO SOMETHING besides NOTHING!
