96 Bed Jail

For some reason, I seemed to have missed anyone asking the following question to the County Commissioners. Here it is:

"What is the highest number of detainee's, by month, for the last 12 months?"

This question should yield a number between 55-65 detainee's per month. The next question should be:

"Do you intend to offer un-used bed space for sale on the remaining number of open beds in the new jail to other counties to hold their prisoners for the purpose of profit here?"

Let me remind you, GOVERNMENT is not supposed to make or turn a PROFIT. Goverment is a BREAK EVEN corporation. It should not profit from the work it does.

I don't know about you folks, but I will not vote for a 96 bed jail if their intent is to turn the jail into a county profit center.

Re: 96 Bed Jail

I don't think renting out space would be considered profit. Covering costs more like it.

Re: 96 Bed Jail

It will cost a lot more to staff a 96 bed jail than a 48 bed jail, probably at least $250,000 more annually in jail staff salaries alone. If I'm not mistaken, the oft quoted state jail commission has warned Howard County NOT to build a jail thinking it can be a profitable enterprise.

It would require one more person. One. If $250,000 is the yearly salary of one person, I am in the wrong **** buisness.

Get er done, yellow dog. YEEHAW!! (Please make note of sarcasm just used)

Re: 96 Bed Jail

To "Holy Crap" -

You're almost right. It would be "PROFIT" if the amount they charge yields more that $.01 cent more than what the basic cost per inmate would be. And then, after the jail is paid for, it would be considered "85% PROFIT" as the only cost involved would be for guards, food and upkeep.

Let's assume there was a "profit" made. So what. The county has a lot to pay for. Other counties make money off us. Can't be THAT wrong.

Re: 96 Bed Jail

I haven't figured you out yet HC, but I'm willing to guess your as LIBERAL as the day is long.

If you can't see why GOVERNMENT isn't supposed to be a PROFIT CENTER, you obviously don't understand the role of GOVERNMENT and your role as part of the PEOPLE !

And you might wonder why our world is so messed up. It is because of people who think like you do. Try taking on some personal responsibility HC. You can at least think for yourself, if you set your mind to it. And you clearly can work through any thought process, so you might want to start dealing with FACTS and formulate your own opinion from doing your own investigations, not just from hearsay.

Nuff Said!

Re: 96 Bed Jail

That's one additional person per shift. There are 3 shifts per day. So that is 3 additional employees right there. You can't expect them to work every day, so you will need at least 2 more to cover their days off. So that is a total of 5. The county judge has been quoted as saying each employee costs the county 50,000 a year in salary and benefits, so 5 X 50,000 equals $250,000.

I think $50,000 a year is a far stretch, and part time employees will not make half that, BUT, point well taken anyways Franklin. I still see no problem with renting jail space.

Re: 96 Bed Jail

It may be from the word "LIBERTY", but it does not mean the same thing !

Liberals are LEFT Leaning folks. Put one in the middle of whatever it is they don't think we should be involved in, and they'll be screaming like little girls for help. Take Iraq and Afghanistan for instance, they think we ought to leave them alone and they won't do anything bad to us. Drop a liberal off in either country and I can assure you they won't last the night there. They'll be looking for a way out in a hurry when their lives are in danger.

HC:

Just so you know ...... Liberals are a minority, politically speaking.

Also, WHITES are now a MINORITY in the state of Texas.

Are you Happy Now? I'm White, but I am not racist.
I don't want Illegal Immigrants here either, and that does not make me a racist either.

I have a few black and hispanic friends. That does not make me racist.

I would pretty much bet the farm that since you like playing the RACIST card, that you in fact, are a RACIST.

Please watch this* CBS7.com news video "Shutdowns coming to Big Spring?" Hear one elected official say that she is "so ashamed of the people in Big Spring that are coming against this jail. It's just a fact. We have to have a jail." BUT DO WE NEED A TAJ MAJAL JAIL?

Re: 96 Bed Jail

I think the question to ask here "!" is, what is your definition of a Taj Majal?

Clearly, the plan they have outlined for a new jail concept now is no where near a "Taj Majal". The Taj Majal is prolifically a vestage of beauty. I don't believe a Steel Frame building would compare at all.

Honestly, I won't vote for a 96 bed facility. If the City and the County come together and share one facility, I would approve it for 96 beds. I think together, they would have a couple of extra beds by the time the facility was filled from both departments.

Re: 96 Bed Jail

Go to the courthouse and look at the designs. Of course we know that it will not be the Taj Mahal. Its called a literary device.

The proposed "law enforcement center" (again look at the name on the plans) will be one of the nicest buildings in town. They told us that they could not put it down town because of the cost of putting up a brick/stone exterior, but that is exactly what the proposed jail has. It may have a steel frame, but it is by no means a Metalsystems building. They want you to think of it as a barn. Its not.

Since the city is offering to take the Senior Citizens Center off of the county hands, possibly the College would be open to a merger of the libraries?

Re: 96 Bed Jail

new jail
the design they are showing us for the new jail
would look o.k. down town.
why would they want a building that would
look better than the other buildings already
down there?.
They have insulated the voters by thinking that
we can't see through all the $$$$$ they say
we will end up paying.

Re: 96 Bed Jail

We couldn't afford to maintain the grounds of the actual Taj Mahal. "Taj Mahal" means "Crown Palace," though it's not a palace. An emperor spent lavishly on the Taj Mahal, and it is in this context that it applies to our bond issue. Do the math: $11.57 million dollars divided by 96 beds equals more than $119,000 per bed, and that's only to build the leviathan! Some more math: 96 beds x 100 sq ft per bed = 9600 sq ft. Why do we need a 39,600 sq ft jail? The County of Howard has a larger tax base than the City of Big Spring: how will the City of Big Spring be able to pay for the operation of the Senior Center?
