Big Spring ISD $109 Million Bond???
After reading the Big Spring Herald article* and viewing the CBS7 video**, I have great concerns. If Big Spring ISD schools are not up to building and safety code standards, why are the buildings being allowed to remain open? I know 99.999% of the population would not value the safety of county jail inmates more highly than the safety of school children. The video stresses that Big Spring is a poor community. How will the tax payers in the poor school district be able to afford tens of millions--maybe more than $100,000,000 of dollars in new debt? * "ISD upgrades carry hefty price" http://www.bigspringherald.com/content/view/78996/1/ (excerpt) "Doing the same to all district campuses would bring the total price tag to more than $109 million. Those figures represent bringing the building up to building and safety code standards,..." ** "Big Spring Hears School Renovation Costs" (video) http://cbs7.com/video/index.asp?ID=2488 |

The most recently built school was constructed over a former garbage hole and within a year of construction started to sink and crack. Take a trip to BS Junior High and you can measure the sinkage on the bricks. Does anyone remember who owned the site prior to being sold do BSISD? |

Didn't know that. Looks like it is time for some more bonds! I am going to have to move to Sand Springs apparently. If not, between the Federal Government and the Local Government I won't have a paycheck. |

I have heard that a very prominent citizen warned the BSISD of the potential for problems due to the fact that there was once a canyon at the site of the new junior high school, but his warnings were apparently ignored. |

*!* you are so right about the land the BSISD (big boys) builted the Jr.Hi. school was built on... Many many many people told that comittie about that canyon, This is a very deep wide canyon...With spots of sinking sand holes... Most of the kids that went to school at the East Ward school know about the sinking holes...I was in that canyon. A few years ago the YMCA build on that same lot and had the same problems, they finaly gave-up and moved over to another spot (with no more problems)... What is wrong with our City and County leaders? they think they don't need our in-put... |

Well Seeing as how this will more than likely be approved. Let me tally up the *potential amounts of bonds facing us. these are just a few in my recent memory, please anyone feel free to adjust accodringly 21.5 Million for Howard College 11.5 Million for Jail 109 Milion For School Equals 142 Million All this for a county that has the average median income of 37,028 a year |

That comes out so far to about 5,000 PER RESIDENT. Not per working resident, that includes children, retirees, everyone. So family of 4 = 20,000 |

I have been wondering as much, JE. How much would taxes have to go up to pay for a 100 million dollar bond. I can't believe anyone would seriously propose spending that much here. |

I am just wondering what other bonds are currently on the books that we are already paying for. It would be nice to get an idea of just how much we are expected to be taxed. |

EMPLOYMENT STATUS Population 16 years and over 25,356 100.0 In labor force 12,285 48.5 Civilian labor force 12,285 48.5 Employed 11,453 45.2 Unemployed 832 3.3 Percent of civilian labor force 6.8 (X) Armed Forces 0 0.0 Not in labor force 13,071 51.5 So according to the census 12,285 of us are in the labor force. So when it gets down to what they intend to actually tax the working individual 142 million divided by 12,285 makes your share $11588.81!!!! With an average median income of 37,028 they only want roughly about 31.25% of your annual income IN THESE BONDS ALONE. Add in our property tax rate, school tax rate, plus the moore board rate, AND what the federal government takes out, looks like some pretty hard times for a local resident. |

that is some pretty harsh but accurate figures JE. i keep asking myself why all of the sudden our leaders are in such a craze to suddenly fix everything and i keep coming up with the same answer. they were told to. they sure as hell did not take the initative on their own and now it appears they are going to tax us to death to pay for their mistakes. they obviously do not know how to budget "our" money which bring's up an intresting question. what happened to all of the money that was suppossed to be allocated for all of these various project's every year in the first place? |

Actually those figures are a little off and the scenario is much worse. He is counting the prison population that accounts for approx 5000 individuals. |

Does that 5,000 figure into the workforce numbers that I posted? I knew I'd be off somewhere
