Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
Though in general the approach of making fun of others is repugnant, I must admit that your idea of having an "eyesore" property [which was published in the paper by the Keep Big Spring Beautiful organization] counter is devilishly clever!
When I get a chance, I'll snap a photo of some 7'+ tall MONSTERS growing just a few feet from the curb on N. Gregg [U.S. Hwy 87] which were not included in the hall of shame. I drove by the Scurry street property after seeing it in last weekend's edition of the Herald, and wondered why it was featured as an eyesore at all. A few wispy clumps of thigh high prairie grasses do not an eyesore make.

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
Below is the photo of the vacant lot next to the building on Gregg street I mentioned in the earlier post. I believe the white building at the left of the photo I snapped was featured in the Keep Big Spring Beautiful eyesores advertisement in this last weekend's edition of the Big Spring Herald. The building seems to be well maintained except for perhaps a very few knee to thigh high weeds. As far as I know, the building owner does not own or control the vacant lot on which the weeds appear to be growing up to 10' tall!

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
I see that a new Keep Big Spring Beautiful's eyesores ad
was in this weekend's edition of the Big Spring Herald. I drove by the address of the residential property and wondered just what were the supposed violations. There were no 10' tall weeds as on N. Gregg St. Was a mistake made, or is Keep Big Spring Beautiful's eyesores campaign now flexing its "taste police" muscles by targeting the home? Will Keep Big Spring Beautiful be choosing paint trim colors and "appropriate" plantings, next?

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
I personally think Pat Simmons has become a very unhappy old lady. One cannot even claim her heart is in the right direction when she is hell bent on publicly humiliating others. Her current tirade against property and homeowners is either a sign of being a total malcontent or a more serious sign of a mental illness. With age most people mellow and resign themselves to a live and let live attitude. This eyesore of a human being (who professes to be a good Christian) has appointed herself Prosecutor for Taste in Big Spring. I have seen this same woman all too often in public places with a toothpick in her mouth. And Keep Big Spring Beautiful should be ashamed of themselves for allowing her to use their name. Perhaps it is time KBSB had an intervention for her. She just may be suffering from a serious medical condition and for that she has my sympathies.

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
I thought the "Eyesores" ads in the Herald were a thing of the past until I opened the weekend edition and saw several more photos of accused "eyesores"--the old New York Hot Dog restaurant on 2nd street is prominently featured, centered at the top of the ad. I'd like to read the "letters sent" [by Code Enforcement?] to this address. Sounds like severe prejudice and discrimination against the property owner's free speech rights to me.

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
I see in this weekend's edition of the Big Spring Herald there is another hall of shame Big Spring Eyesores ad.
Have you had a chance to see the newly colorized concrete retaining wall on the east side of the Howard County courthouse? Who is responsible for the choosing the terracotta orange color? I drove by Saturday as the retaining wall was being painted, and the once inoffensive wall struck me as being a very loud ersatz element--as if someone inspired by a Louis Barragan design had decided to experiment with the courthouse lawn. We can only hope the paint will dry darker and the color will somehow come in to better tune with the chromatically reserved courthouse.

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
I do not know who is responsible for choosing the paint colors for the buildings downtown, but most are more appropriate for adobe type buildings.
I do not recall any adobe buildings anywhere in Big Spring.
When is the city going to beautify the vacant lots that are owned by the city?
La Posada has a separate bar area shut off from the dining area.

*!*, I think I'm right when I say Keep Big Spring Beautiful is making improvements to the courthouse grounds. At one of the recent County Commissioners meetings, Judge Barr's wife told of some of the plans to perk-up the property and I believe she represented KBSB.

Good question. It seems as if the city is not enforcing ordinances equally. I know of one property--not the one on Gregg St. I shared in an earlier post--where the weeds could be, incredibly, twelve to fifteen feet tall!

I'm sure they mean well...but the peculiar color chosen for the retaining wall, is that ACTUALLY an improvement? Ditto for the "public as a frog" shadeless stone benches which all of a whopping three persons have likely used.

Speaking of eye sores in Big Spring
How about some pictured of cars and
junk parked in front yards.
The ones parked right up to the front door.
As many as three parked in one yard.
If they had complyed with the first rule
this revised ordnance would not have come up.
Side yard parking did not look bad.
so now,
the good will suffer right along with the bad.

Re: Big Spring Eye Sore
Well, the 1st picture on this post shows Big Springs biggest eye sore and oldest impediment to its growth (my opinion).
I will say that she has a noble cause, but, that old eye sore is the reason I would never be involved in the KBSB program. Anyone that treats others as if they were worthless piles of trash to be kicked to the curb does not deserve the awards and solicitations that the old eye sore has received.
