poem from my daily journal
19720328 Tuesday the monster cycle my aged cracked black leather was anothers skin now is my second skin protecting me from the rage of the asphalt ghoddess silently approaching the slumbering beast her fire now banked dormant waiting wishing capable of flaming to an instant inferno her ritual begins checking her controls her drive chain her oil her tires opening her fuel tank valve the enchanting elixir of the petroleum ghoddess slacking the thirst of her gasaholic carburetor setting her choke swinging our her kick start lever mounting her switching on her ignition her cyclopean eye flashing to life enraged demanding to know who is disturbing her slumber my usual high arching starting kick my right leg muscles tensing my joints locking my foot my ankle my knee forcing her resistant pistons to travel their familiar reciprocating paths in her resilient twin cylinders of iron the grand symphony of her motors parts the heart of the beast her intimate precise timing her ignition points requesting receiving delivering the holy fire of the electrical ghoddess to the explosive mixture waiting inside her igniting the air fuel mixture the foul breath of the petroleum ghoddess her motor coughing mocking my half hearted attempt at disturbing her slumber my second attempt more fierce invoking the names of the ghoddesses blaspheming them the beast roaring cloaking herself in smoke shrieking in agony her life giving blood of the petroleum ghoddess not yet lubricating her internal parts the beasts evil heart the beast settling down to a steady ruuump ruuump ruuump anticipating quivering the unseeing eye of the beast reaching searching futilely stabbing the black heart of the night ghoddess mute elongated endless narrow yellow twins dividing the asphalt ghoddess into death and life betraying her evasive path the high speed wobbling in her front wheel warning begging imploring pleading soliciting caution prudence wisdom the beast bowing to the demands of the asphalt ghoddess her rubber tires clawing grasping the undulating surface her metal parts rending sparks paying homage as her curtsies get lower and lower my thighs pressing against her fuel tank my feet resting upon her foot pegs my hands gripping her handlebars my right hand urging her onward my body blending with hers synchronized creating the magic am i the beast or is the beast me one mind many parts daring living responding surviving separating for the casual return journey the asphalt ghoddess now dociled humbled tamed returning the beast to her lair to her slumber the night air cooling her heated parts unevenly her hot parts ticking voicing their annoyance gradually finally quieting the beast slumbering again until the next time her master rouses her demanding her to perform to ride forth tempting the death ghoddess denying her mocking her and living george william Newport copyright 28 March 1972 |
