The Mason City Globe Gazette Article

Dillinger Days celebration is a possibility
By JOHN SKIPPER, Of The Globe Gazette
MASON CITY — The Mason City Downtown Association is considering holding “Dillinger Days” as a downtown promotion.
“It might be one day, it might be two — it’s just in the talking stages,” said Mary Hamiel, executive director of the Downtown Association.
“We’ve talked about having it in conjunction with Friday Night Live and maybe have activities on Saturday, too.”
Hamiel said there is talk about having actors recreate the robbery in which gangster John Dillinger and his gang robbed the First National Bank, now City Centre.
“There would be music and refreshments. It would be a way of bringing people downtown,” said Hamiel.
“We had a Dillinger Days promotion three years ago. Some people were a little concerned about honoring a bank robber,” she said.
“We look at it more as a historic event that happened in our town.”
The robbery occurred on March 13, 1934.

" When I travel and tell people where I'm from, the most common thing people say, "Isn't that the town where some TV reporter disappeared?" We're famous for this. So, does that mean we should have a Jodi Huisentruit Days? I think not.
