Re: More news on Sweeney
Sweeney gets 30 days in jail for false Huisentruit report

MASON CITY — Cynthia Sweeney, the woman who claimed to have information about Jodi Huisentruit’s alleged death, was sentenced to 30 days in jail Friday for providing false information.
Sweeney, 26, who according to court records now lives in Pocahontas, appeared in Cerro Gordo County District Court where Associate Judge Carolyn Grupp issued a sis-month jail term and suspended all but 30 days.
Grupp also ordered Sweeney to pay a $350 fine, court costs and the extradition fee from Minnesota.
A request to allow Sweeney to serve her jail time in the county where she resides and be allowed work release was approved by Grupp.
In December 2006 Sweeney, who then lived in Anoka, Minn., traveled to Iowa and told authorities that she was 13 when she saw six men kill Jodi Huisentruit, a former KIMT-TV newswoman who went missing in 1995.
No signs of Huisentruit or any indication of whether she is alive or dead have been found.
In addition to making the claims to authorities, Sweeney was interviewed by two Minnesota television stations, vividly describing a murder scene and what she claimed was done with the body after the murder.
Within days, though, Sweeney recanted her story after investigators could not verify her claims.
“I understand that by lying to police, not telling them the whole story, people had to do extra work and use extra resources,” Sweeney said in court. “I’m sorry I did not tell the whole truth.
“I understand I will have to pay a fine and pay back some of the costs,” she said, “I am prepared to do that.”
Addressing Sweeney, Grupp said the impact of the statement was far-reaching.
“This false report has impacted your life,” Grupp said. “It also had a significant impact on law enforcement and upon a grieving family. Not just the Huisentruit family, but the entire family of North Iowa, which has followed this tragedy. It renewed wounds and sent law enforcement on a wild goose chase.”
Three members of Sweeney’s family and two law enforcement officers who worked on the investigation were in the courtroom.
Grupp gave Sweeney until Dec. 10 to make arrangements in her home county, or to begin serving her jail sentence in Cerro Gordo County.
